Crate Training for Housebreaking Your Shih Tzu

Shih tzus are known for being positively receptive to bring housebroken. But people are still divided over using crate training, or some of the more modern house training methods that have been suggested over the years. But in any event and whatever your final method is, your main aim is to prevent any peeing or pooing inside your home, and to do so with the least pain for all as circumstances will allow.

With regard to punitive approaches to training, more and more animal owners are acknowledging that these are forms of animal abuse that need to be avoided. Shouting and hitting a dog therefore needs to be more and more a thing of the past. What is more and more acceptable nowadays, and in fact is proven to work, is teaching your dog what to do, and to let them know when you are unhappy. This way, you can effectively communicate with your dog on a level that is reward-based, whether through treats or affection. Again, it all starts with good Shih Tzu training.

Most people who will be busy with work for most of the day end up preferring to keep the dog in a crate, or in some cases, training it to have a way of properly disposing its pee or poo, either in an elimination spot outdoors, or in the toilet. Of course, this can be trained in a dog, but only through encouragement, perseverance, and treats.

What if a dog ends up getting away with an accident despite what you taught to it? Bear in mind that there is no point in scolding if the dog is not caught in the act, or about to do it. If you catch the dog, then you may want to lift it (if it is still a handy puppy) and bring them to your agreed-upon spot outside. If you fail to catch them, why bother since it doesn’t make sense anyway? But housetraining is really ideal for puppies since the idea can stick for life.

One problem that may impede the progress of a shitzu training-trainee is too much shouting if the dog is still young and lacks quick response to your commands. But despite this, keep up the effort to help your dog get things right, while also keeping an eye out for behavior that is not desirable and need to be corrected.

The idea through which the crate functions is that a dog cannot eliminate in the place where it sleeps. Since the very beginning, dogs are den animals and this means they want to keep their living quarters as clean as possible. By keeping the crate comfortable and snug with soft bedding, food and water, a crate can be your dog’s area of privacy and safety. All this supports the idea that crates train the dog to have timing in their elimination.
